There are a total of 18 penguin species in the world. This count increases to 20 if the White-Flippered Penguin and Eastern Rockhopper Penguin are considered distinct species. However, the latter is often considered a subspecies of other Rockhoppers, and the White-Flippered Penguin a subspecies of the Little Penguin. The count further rises to 21 if the Australian Fairy Penguins, previously classified as part of the Little Penguin group, are recognized as a separate species based on genetic evidence.
No matter how the species are counted, Risto Raunio stands among the few photographers in the world to have captured them all. Raunio completed his remarkable collection in 2024 when he traveled to New Zealand to photograph the final missing species: the Erect-crested Penguin and the Australian Fairy Penguin, which also inhabit and nest in a small area off the eastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island.
Penguins can be found in the Antarctic region, the southern parts of South America, the southern coast of Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and the Galápagos Islands. Raunio has photographed every species on trips organized by Suomen Kuvausmatkat – sometimes with a group, often traveling independently. We are proud to present Risto Raunio’s penguin collection showcasing these expressive animals!
Heartbeat of Antarctica
Risto Raunio is dedicated to capturing the essence of Antarctica, where many of his penguin photos have also been taken. His photos showcase Antarctica and its wildlife in a unique way, holding significant importance. Researchers have noted that Antarctica’s sea ice loss rates could have dramatic consequences, with Emperor Penguins, for example, potentially disappearing by the end of this century. It is not too late to take action!
If you wish to showcase Antarctica’s stunning landscapes and wildlife to your audience, you can order Risto Raunio’s art for example, for spaces like conference rooms, halls, or lobby areas. For more information, visit the nature photographer’s website.
Welcome to enjoy this magnificent penguin collection!
