Arvi Tyni’s crane collection, filmed with a trail camera in Lappeenranta, Finland, presents the cycle of life in nature.
The cranes arrive at their nesting bog while there is still snow on the ground. An old Finnish proverb says, “The bog will thaw before the crane dies.” They carefully inspect the nesting site. Passing birds are told with loud calls that the nesting bog is already occupied.
Spring progresses
The cranes take turns incubating the eggs, while the one off duty goes to feed. At last, the chicks hatch. Crane chicks set off immediately after hatching. They must eat a great deal, as they need to grow enormously over the course of the summer. The cranes’ diet consists of what bogs, wetlands, and fields have to offer. The crane is omnivorous and eats, among other things, frogs, small rodents, insects, and berries.
Cycle of Survival
Even the best preparation is not always enough, and not all make it to the migration. Sometimes predators take their share. And so the cycle continues, year after year, in the quiet rhythm of the northern wild.
