Photographing the Big Five is a dream for many wildlife photographers.
The full set of the Big Five includes the African elephant, rhinoceros, African buffalo, lion, and leopard – five animals once considered Africa’s most dangerous and difficult targets of big-game hunting. Read more about the Big Five here.
The second part of Risto Raunio’s Big Five series introduces the giants of the savannah: the African buffalo, rhinoceros, and elephant.
The powerful African buffalo is known for its unpredictable nature and formidable horns. Rhinoceroses – both black and white – are iconic symbols of strength and resilience, yet tragically among the most endangered of the Big Five. Finally, towering above them all, the elephants. While the African elephant traditionally represents the Big Five, Risto’s collection also features other remarkable elephant species.
These images celebrate the grandeur, vulnerability, and raw presence of Africa’s most impressive giants – exactly where they belong: free and wild.
